Whether you’re still in high school or finishing up your degree in college here are 5 games (in no particular order) you shouldn’t be without whilst procrastinating for that 5 page paper due tomorrow.
Spore - Think of it as review for your biology class. This game allows you to start off as a micro-organism and evolve, letting you choose every aspect of your creature along the way. Eventually, you’ll be able to create and manage your own civilizations and worlds. Of course, then it doubles as review for your sociology. Video games are so educational. Spore is scheduled to release September 7th for the PC. Versions for the Nintendo DS, Wii, and iPhone will come shortly after.
Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 “In Red Alert 3, the desperate leadership of a doomed Soviet Union travels back in time to change history and restore the glory of Mother Russia. The time travel mission goes awry, creating an alternate timeline where technology has followed an entirely different evolution, a new superpower has been thrust on to the world stage, and World War III is raging. The Empire of the Rising Sun has risen in the East, making World War III a three-way struggle between the Soviets, the Allies, and the Empire with armies fielding wacky and wonderful weapons and technologies like Tesla coils, heavily armed War Blimps, teleportation, armored bears, intelligent dolphins, floating island fortresses, and transforming tanks. ” (terms in bold are guaranteed to be awesome) PC, XBOX, PS3 - October 28, 2008.
Left 4 Dead - This will be Valve’s rendition of the zombie shooter. Of course, since it’s being made by Valve we can only expect high quality and satisfying zombie killing action. The game will also feature multiplayer which is the feature that will undoubtedly have you playing this game for months. Explore the mechanics of blowing up Zombies’ heads with the Source Engine and Havik Physics engine. For your Computer Science buffs the game will also feature version 2 of Turtle Rock’s Artificial Intelligence engine. The XBOX and PC Versions are expected to release on 11/20/2008. The PS3 version has not been confirmed, but Valve’s Doug Lambardi hinted at Left 4 Dead coming to the PS3 in 2009.
Far Cry 2 - Far Cry 2 is the ultimate tech demo. It offers spectacular visual effects and animations using the CryEngine–the same one that powers Crysis.
Resistance 2 - A sequel to Resistance: Fall of Man, a PS3 launch title, promises to be one of the best FPS on the Playstation 3 to date.
Honorable Mention (aka the games I didn’t think about while writing this list): Mercenaries 2 (PS2, PS3, XBOX 360, PC), LittleBigPlanet, Killzone 2, Final Fantasy. XIII, Gears of War 2.

Great list, but the Far Cry 2 is using a custom engine named Dunia that was developed specifically for the game. Although the IP rights were purchased from Crytek who did develop Crysis.
