Several rumors have been floating around that Steam will begin offering game rentals to it’s users. According to one source, an upcoming Steam update will add this new functionality:
- Games will be up for rent at varying time lengths.
- Price points starting at $5.
- More games to be added to rental list.
- New category in Steam Store.
The source was unclear on whether this functionality was included in today’s (9-15-08) update, or whether another update will be delivered later today or later in the week. There is no sign of the rumored changes in the Steam Store at this point, but today’s update added a right-click “View game account” menu option for “subscription based games.” (whatever those are)
Update: It seems that last option mentioned is actually for subscription-based MMO games. Thanks Andy.

So much for GameStop CEO’s claim that digital distribution isn’t going anywhere, eh?
